Open Position: Online Writing Lab (OWL) Webmaster/Technical Coordinator

The Writing Lab in the English Department seeks an OWL Webmaster/Technical Coordinator (Webmaster) for the 2008-2009 school year. The position is a .25 FTE(quarter-time), 12-month assistantship beginning in August 2008. Applicants must be eligible to work as graduate assistants at Purdue University. Candidates should have strong background in dynamic web programming (PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS) and knowledge of or interest in theory and pedagogy related to computers and writing, composition and rhetoric, and writing center pedagogy.

The OWL Webmaster/Technical Coordinator works with the OWL Coordinator and Writing Lab administration to develop and maintain the OWL at Purdue Family of Sites (http://owl.english.purdue.edu/), a website which receives approximately 84,000,000 visits a year. Although the position primarily involves programming and web design, the position also includes opportunities for administrative work (such as budgeting, report writing, and future planning).

Responsibilities include:

  1. Dynamic web programming and design on the OWL Family of Sites and Content Management System
  2. Assisting in the development of educational technology goals, pedagogy, and resources for OWL and the Writing Lab.
  3. Working with CLA-IT to maintain, backup, and upgrade our OWL
  4. servers, site, and web software.
  5. Collaborating with the OWL Coordinator, Writing Lab administration, and other programs on ongoing projects, such as research and engagement.
